Satan Before Time

Time as we know it began with the creation of the heavens and earth. It is measured in increments that involve the rotation of the earth on its axis and our course around the sun. The angels were present at the creation of our world.

Then the LORD spoke to Job out of the storm. He said: Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone—while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?

Job 38:1-7

What we know about angels and the spirit world is limited. In fact, what we don’t know is far greater than what we do know. However, if we rely on the Bible as our source of knowledge, we would have to conclude that angels existed prior the creation of our world. The Lord Jesus referred to the Lake of Fire, created for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41). So we may conclude that the following prophecy found in Isaiah refers to Satan, the greatest of the original angels.

How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’ But you are brought down to the realm of the dead, to the depths of the pit.

Isaiah 14:12-15

There is a similar prophetic passage found in Ezekiel (Ezekiel 28:11-19) that fits none other than Satan, originally a Holy Angel who succumbed to pride. His existence, work and ultimate doom is consistently confirmed from Genesis to Revelation.

Jesus said he saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven (Luke 10:18). Perhaps he was referring to an event that predates time and the creation of our race.

We are not certain of much regarding the origin of Satan and his fall. That doesn’t diminish what we know about his tenure as the god of this age, ruler of the kingdom of the air, and prince of this world.
